The digital habit change programme helping individuals – and the NHS – to stay healthy

As part of their efforts to tackle some of the major issues surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, the government is turning to business. Fast-moving, innovative companies have many of the skills we need to solve some of the consequences of this crisis, whether it is supporting vulnerable people confined to their homes, or delivering healthcare services in a remote setting.

In 2019, we launched the Disruption50 Index – a pioneering project combining human expertise with AI technology – to discover the UK’s most disruptive businesses.

Several innovative healthcare businesses made the list. This week, we take a closer look at Second Nature (formerly OurPath), a digital habit change programme that helps its users with healthy living.

Lose weight, stay healthy

Second Nature combines behavioural science with educational content, healthtech (such as app-connected weighing scales), and live mentor support from registered dietitians and nutritionists, to improve peoples’ lifestyles in the long term. This focuses weight loss around developing – and maintaining – healthy habits, rather than the fad diets which don’t achieve longstanding behavioural effects.

Second Nature was the first online habit change programme to be commissioned by the NHS, where it has been particularly effective in improving outcomes for patients with type 2 diabetes. In fact, after 6 months using the programme, 40 per cent of patients showed blood sugar levels below the diagnostic threshold for diabetes. This data shows how effective behavioural change management and nutritional advice can be at improving peoples’ health, thereby making it a cost-effective solution for healthcare providers.
